                                                        Mrs. Van Tassel’s Homework
                                                 Second Grade Homework

Parents: homework will come home on Mondays and it is due on Friday mornings. I will put the day that your child should complete the activity, however that is a guide. For example: a worksheet for Thursday, your child may not learn that concept until Thursday at school. Homework is for reinforcement and instilling responsibility.

Reading should be done every night and the reading log in the agenda marked. Thanks for your support.

Homework is important, but here are a few pointers as a parent: Please work with your child and help them with the assignment (not doing it for them.)  Talk out problems with your child instead of just giving the answers.  Review assignments for accuracy and neatness.  Be sure to acknowledge and praise the work that they have done.

If your child does not understand the homework please write a note in their planner or email me so that I can address it promptly.

Homework is given daily.  Assignments will be placed in their Binder and should be completed and returned to school by the end of the week. Homework wil not be graded. Homework that is not returned to the teacher will result in an incomplete and a note will be written in the planner.  Five late homework assignments in one report card period will be marked as a "Needs Improvement" on the report card and this will affect if they receive an award.

Homework will usually consist of two practice sheets and reading a book of your child's choice for at least 20 minutes. Practice sheets will be in the area of Spelling, Phonics, Reading strategies, Writing, Science, or Math.

Students are expected to read at home every night for 15 - 20 minutes.  They may choose which book to read, but it is recommended that they choose a book on their AR level.  Reading nightly will help students develop their reading skills at their appropriate level.  Students may check out books from the Media Center, a County Library, or choose a book from home.  They may read by themselves, read aloud to you or read with you (you read a part and they read a part).  Students are responsible for bringing their book home nightly.  Students must write down the title of the book they read and the AR level (if available) in their planner nightly.

Homework should not exceed 30 minutes.  If your child seems to need more time, please contact me so that we can discuss the situation and make any needed adjustments.

Although your child will be given adequate time in class, if he/she does not complete their classwork it may be taken home for homework in some cases.  If this becomes a pattern, we will need to discuss the situation and create a plan.

Students who are absent will be given some extra time to complete and turn in the work from days missed.

If you are planning to take your child out of school for an extended time and would like work for your child, please give me 3 to 5 days notice to gather the work together.

Remember: Completing and turning homework daily is your child's responsibility.
