Dear Parents,
~Welcome to a new year!~ My name is Kelli Van Tassel.~ I graduated from Florida State University. This is my seventh year at Mary E. Bryant. This will be my third year teaching second grade. I am very excited and truly cannot wait to meet each of my students and watch them grow both academically and developmentally.
Communication: Your child will have a binder with their agenda and homework in it. Your child will be responsible for marking their agenda with their behavior and communicating any special events that I may post on the board. You are also asked to please sign or initial the square daily to show that you know what their behavior is and what is happening in the school/classroom. Please use the sheets in this binder/agenda for notes to me and empty/check the binder daily.
Arrival / Departure- Arrival time is between 7:30a.m. and 8:00a.m.~ If your child is late, he / she must sign in at the office with a parent.~ If your child eats breakfast at school in the morning please make sure he / she has enough time to eat and get to class on time.~ If your child is absent, you must call the office in order for the absence to be excused.~ If there are any changes in their status as a car rider or a bus rider then the office and I will need a hand written note from the parent and / or guardian (an email will work) prior to the date of the change .~ If you need to pick your child up early, you need to sign him / her out in the office. It must be 45 minutes or more before dismissal.~ They will call for your child from there. Thanks!
Allergies- Please let me know immediately of any allergies your child may have.
Homework- Homework will be given weekly and due weekly so your child will need your support and encouragement to get it done! The homework will be in the daily binder and on the website when available. Along with this will be an Accelerated Readers log. Your child will need to read for 10-20 minutes nightly and their log must be filled out nightly.
Medication / Illness- If your child needs to take a prescribed medication, a form must be filled out.~ All medicine must be kept in the office.~ I cannot give over the counter medicine.~ Please do not send your child to school if he / she is sick.
Snack in class- We will have a snack every day. Please send in a healthy snack with your child every day. I will not be providing snacks. Also, please do not send a snack that needs a spoon or any sweet drinks. They may only have water in the classroom. Please do send in a water bottle daily!!
Lunch Money- If your child chooses to buy lunch, lunch money should be sent in a~ sealed envelope labeled with the child’s name, teacher’s name, and lunch number. You can use the online meal pay system.
Please discuss your policy on the snack bar with your own child. I am not in the lunchroom with your child and cannot monitor what they eat.
SNOWCONES/popcorn: these given are out one Friday once a month and if you have a PTA card it is free if not it is 50 cents. Again, offered only during lunch.
Bathroom and water: Children are allowed to use the bathroom any time and get water any time in the classroom. I encourage them to do both of these during centers (right before lunch), before we go to specials and before we go outside. However, they will not be able to go during computer lab time or lunch unless it is an emergency. I do encourage them to try before we go to these two events. Just to let you know.
Serve form- You must have a serve form filled out in order to work in our classroom or have lunch with your child. You can get one of these from the office. Let me know at any time if you would like to help in the classroom with centers or by reading a book to the class. There is a new policy stating that you must have a valid driver’s license whenever you are on campus.
~
Student of the Week- After the year begins we will have a “Student of the week” each week. It is a random drawing and everyone will get a chance. I will try and let you know the Thursday before if your child is the “Student of the week” for the next week.~ Your child will provide the class with a poster about themselves; they may also bring in a favorite book to share.
*Also, if you have any suggestions, concerns or questions please see me directly.~ This is a partnership so let’s work together to make your child successful!~
Thanks!~~~
Sincerely,
Kelli Van Tassel
